Blankenburg connection Rotterdam
Yet another civil engineering job in Rotterdam! Commissioned by BAAK (construction consortium of Ballast Nedam, DEME Group and Macquarie), Safe is helping to build the Blankenburg connection. This new motorway (A24) improves traffic flow and makes the traffic network in the Rotterdam region more reliable. In addition, the road contributes to further growth of the port of Rotterdam and Greenport Westland.
Oosterweel connection Antwerp
In our previous newsletter, we already informed you about our project in Antwerp, the Oosterweel connection, through a sneak preview. Now more! The Oosterweelverbinding completes Antwerp's ring road, contributing to much better mobility. A traffic-safe infrastructure will be constructed, which will also ensure a more liveable environment. There will also be a wide range of sustainable transport alternatives, in the form of extensive cycling facilities, expansion of public transport and more P+Rs around the city.
Ukraine
Safe shows its heart for Ukraine.
Both for the entire Ukrainian population and also for some colleagues of our sister company Safe Slovakia in particular. For several years now, these support builders from Ukraine have been assembling the most insane constructions for Safe. Until a few weeks ago...
Meanwhile, they have been mobilised as soldiers and are fighting for their homeland. With all the risks involved. Unrealistic and unfathomable to us, yet close again.
Unanimously, the entire staff from the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland decided to support these people not only morally but also financially. Our own fundraising campaign raised a nice amount and will hopefully give the Ukrainians a financial boost.
At Safe, we continue to work on our beautiful projects, we are doing well, the sun is shining here. But in the meantime, our thoughts are with the Ukrainians and our Ukrainian colleagues, and sympathise with them immensely.
Bergwijk bridge in Merelbeke.
Replacement Bergwijk Bridge Merelbeke challenging project
The 60-year-old Bergwijk Bridge in the Fraterstraat over the Ringvaart in Merelbeke will be replaced by a brand new bridge with three lanes, a two-way bicycle path and a footpath. The current bridge is too low for modern shipping and offers insufficient safe space for road users.

More transport can cross the Albert Canal. Safe makes its contribution
Major raising of bridges Albert Canal
With almost 40 million tonnes of goods transported annually, the Albert Canal is the most important waterway in Flanders. Container transport in particular has seen substantial growth over the past decade. That is why De Vlaamse Waterweg is investing heavily to increase the capacity of the Albert Canal. Bottleneck for inland navigation is the current restriction in clearance height and width under the bridges. By raising the bridges to a clear headway of 9.10 metres, ships with four layers of containers will soon be able to navigate the canal safely and smoothly.
